A sound amplifier designed based on the theory of proportion and relation of elements.

Design Brief: To design a sound amplifier using the theory of proportion and relation of elements. Product should only be made of wood, and is capable of standing on its own.

Concept:

Intriguing, whereby the product looks as if it is floating or unstable, but is actually capable of standing on its own while looking simply aesthetically pleasing.

Reflection:

For this project, I decided to take a risk by doing a design that could potentially be unstable due to the way the structure is arranged. Although risky, this simple arrangement has made this boxy sound amplifier even more more intriguing to look at as compared to other alternatives I have thought of. In addition, in a way, I wish to challenge myself and in another, I was able to explore more into proportion and learn from this experience, especially from the problems that have arose during the making.

Looking deeper into the use of relationship of elements in this example, this principal of proportion is used to utilize the qualities of contrasting shapes. Each volume chosen differ as much as possible from the other, in terms of dimensions, positions and proportions. The largest of the elements is called the dominant volume. With its unmistakable huge size, it is nature for the dominant element to draw your attention when you laid your eyes on a design. It commands attention, emphasizing its importance with its size as it prevails over other elements in the design. However, if a design only has such an element, the overall product could look too overwhelming and boring. Hence sub-dominant and subordinate are introduced to fill in what is missing from the design in order to unit and balance out the overall feel of the product. Generally, the use of such principle will bring out a more fun and interesting yet well-balanced appearance from the product to make them captivating and memorable.
